App Store Releases Surge 80% in Q1 2026, AI a Factor
New figures reveal a sharp increase in app launches, countering predictions that AI would end the dominance of mobile applications. Market intelligence firm Appfigures reports worldwide app releases rose 60% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026 across Apple's App Store and Google Play. The growth reached 80% specifically on the iOS App Store. So far in April 2026, total releases climbed 104% on both platforms compared to last year, and 89% on iOS.
Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Greg "Joz" Joswiak, remarked in a recent interview that rumors of the App Store's demise amid AI advancements "may have been greatly exaggerated."
Concerns Over AI Replacing Apps
Industry voices have raised worries that AI chatbots and agents might pull users from traditional apps. Nothing CEO Carl Pei, who leads efforts on a smartphone tailored for the AI age, has voiced such views. Last year, The New York Times covered ideas about emerging platforms overtaking smartphones, including smart glasses, ambient computing devices, or redesigned smartwatches with AI capabilities.
OpenAI collaborates with former Apple designer Jony Ive on an AI hardware device. These developments fuel speculation about shifts away from app-based mobile computing.
Appfigures' findings suggest a different outcome. AI tools could simplify app development for non-experts, sparking a wave of new releases from creators with concepts but limited coding experience. This might revive interest in app stores.
Shifts in Top App Categories
Certain app types lead the increase. Mobile games remain the largest share of new worldwide releases in Q1 2026, consistent with past trends. Productivity apps now rank in the top five categories. Utilities took second place. Lifestyle apps advanced from fifth last year to third. Health and fitness apps filled the fifth spot.
Tools such as Claude Code or Replit may drive this uptick. These platforms could enable quicker app building, even for first-time developers, as AI usability improves.

Apple Faces Review Challenges
The influx strains Apple's review process. Recently, the company removed the rewards app Freecash from the App Store due to rules violations, after it reached the top five in charts for months. Another incident involved a fake cryptocurrency app mimicking Ledger Live, which stole $9.5 million in crypto from users.
Apple handles many threats effectively. Its 2024 review data showed removal or rejection of over 17,000 apps for bait-and-switch tactics. The firm turned down more than 320,000 submissions deemed spam, copies, or misleading. It also blocked over 37,000 potentially fraudulent apps from users.
Commentators like John Gruber, a prominent Apple observer, have called for a dedicated team to monitor rising scammy or high-earning fraudulent apps. As AI aids more rapid app creation, including risky ones, this demand may intensify.
Appfigures, known for tracking app market trends since its founding, provides data that highlights these patterns. Apple's App Store, launched in 2008, revolutionized mobile software distribution. Google Play followed soon after. Figures like Joswiak, with decades at Apple, guide marketing for these platforms. Pei's Nothing brand challenges established phone makers with AI focus. Ive's design legacy spans iconic Apple products from iMac to iPhone.
The data points to sustained growth, with AI possibly fueling broader participation in app development.
