Merger Details and Early Exits

SpaceX bought xAI in February. Both firms belonged to Musk. The deal brought new leadership to the combined operation. Musk gave it the name SpaceXAI earlier this month.

TechCrunch covered 11 departures announced soon after the merger. That group included two co-founders. SpaceX, founded by Musk in 2002, focuses on rocket launches and satellite internet through Starlink. It has pushed boundaries with reusable Falcon rockets and the Starship program for Mars missions. xAI, which Musk started in July 2023, aims to understand the universe through AI. It released the Grok chatbot as a rival to models like ChatGPT.

Key Team Losses Raise Alarms

The pre-training group suffered most after lead Juntang Zhuang departed. Pre-training forms the base for new AI models. Employees and those near SpaceXAI worry the company may lack focus on top models, per The Information.

Mira Murati knows AI leadership well. She served as OpenAI's chief technology officer until late 2024. Then she launched Thinking Machine Labs to advance AI development.

Musk's intense work demands pushed some away. Staff across his firms, like Tesla, have raised similar issues. One source told The Information that Musk pushed tight deadlines for model training. That pressure led to shortcuts on Grok.

Not all leaves stem from burnout. Some sought to sell shares. SpaceX runs regular tenders for private stock sales. Others bet on quick liquidity from a major IPO. With cash in sight, they skip high-stress roles without clear paths to best-in-class AI.

SpaceXAI sits at the cross of space tech and AI. SpaceX employs thousands on launch pads and data centers. xAI built quickly with Grok versions trained on vast compute. The merger promised synergies, like AI for rocket control or data analysis. Yet talent flight tests that vision. Pre-training losses could slow model advances at a time when Meta, OpenAI, and others race ahead.
