Moonshot AI eyes $30 billion valuation
Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI is seeking a valuation of up to $30 billion in its next fundraising effort. The Beijing-based company, best known for its Kimi chatbot, aims to raise between $1 billion and $2 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter reported by the South China Morning Post.
The targeted valuation represents a sharp increase from the company's recent worth. Moonshot was valued at $4.3 billion in late 2025, meaning the new target is more than six times that figure. It also marks a 50 percent jump over the $20 billion valuation from its previous funding round in May.
Revenue growth and technical milestones
The startup's annual recurring revenue has doubled to approximately $200 million as of April 2026. On the technical front, Moonshot's flagship model Kimi K2.6 reportedly matches the performance of GPT-5.4 and Claude Opus 4.6 on coding benchmarks, putting it on par with leading US competitors in that specific area.

Despite its technical achievements, Moonshot operates in a fiercely competitive Chinese AI landscape. Rivals include DeepSeek, Alibaba, and MiniMax. In April, DeepSeek released V4-Pro, described as the largest open-weights model to date. That model surpasses Kimi K2.6 in size and is offered at a far lower price point, intensifying the pricing pressure on Moonshot.
IPO preparations underway
Moonshot is also laying groundwork for a potential initial public offering in Hong Kong. Sources say the company is unwinding its offshore corporate structure, a move typically undertaken to streamline operations and comply with listing requirements. An IPO would provide Moonshot with additional capital to fund its expansion and compete more aggressively in the global AI race.
The funding round and IPO plans come as Chinese AI startups face both opportunities and headwinds. Domestic demand for advanced AI services is growing, but the market is saturated with well-funded competitors. Moonshot will need to differentiate its offerings beyond the Kimi chatbot to sustain its lofty valuation ambitions.
