Microsoft OpenAI Deal Allows Multi-Cloud Access
Microsoft and OpenAI ended their exclusive cloud arrangement this week through an updated agreement. The change lets OpenAI distribute its products and services across all cloud providers. OpenAI quickly followed by announcing availability of its latest AI models, Codex, and other tools on AWS, Microsoft's main cloud competitor.
Key Changes in the Agreement
Microsoft revealed the deal modifications on Monday. OpenAI's move to AWS came a day later. This shift followed Amazon's $50 billion agreement with OpenAI earlier in 2026. That pact positioned AWS as a third-party provider for OpenAI Frontier and included work on custom models for Alexa.
Microsoft gains from the setup. It receives 20 percent of revenue from ChatGPT and OpenAI's API platform. This covers earnings from rival clouds like AWS. A revenue cap applies, but both sides benefit despite initial Microsoft irritation.
Microsoft stays as OpenAI's main cloud partner. It gets OpenAI products first on Azure. Without exclusivity, rivals receive models shortly after. OpenAI models might soon appear on Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
Microsoft's license for OpenAI models runs through 2032, up from 2030. Revenue sharing flows one way now. Microsoft pays no 20 percent of Azure OpenAI revenue to OpenAI. It avoids shares on search and news ad growth over 15 percent yearly. Microsoft holds about 27 percent of OpenAI's for-profit arm.
The update removed ties to artificial general intelligence (AGI). Microsoft keeps access to advanced models post-AGI. OpenAI lacks incentive to declare AGI to exit the deal.
History of Partnership Strains
Tensions marked the relationship. Disputes over AGI lasted over a year. They peaked when OpenAI eyed a $3 billion purchase of AI coding tool Windsurf. OpenAI sought exemption from Microsoft terms and considered antitrust claims. It dropped the plan, but it fueled talks amid OpenAI's for-profit shift.
Microsoft grew cautious after Sam Altman's 2023 ouster by OpenAI's nonprofit board. Satya Nadella hired DeepMind cofounder Mustafa Suleyman for Microsoft AI. Altman reacted poorly to Suleyman engaging OpenAI engineers directly.
Conflicts escalated in 2024. Microsoft's AI chief berated ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati in a meeting, seeking code access. Bill Gates, CTO Kevin Scott, and Nadella had built the partnership carefully. Suleyman aimed to build independent Microsoft AI models.
OpenAI faces issues like controversies, strategy changes, and executive turnover. Elon Musk and Altman clashed in court this week over OpenAI. Microsoft got pulled in.
Microsoft's Broader AI Efforts
Microsoft develops in-house models like MAI-Transcribe-1 for speech-to-text in 25 languages. Most are task-specific or smaller than OpenAI's large language models.
Microsoft eyes Anthropic options outperforming OpenAI in tasks. It trials Claude Code and has weighed Google's Gemini for products.
