Meta Acquires ARI to Boost Humanoid Robotics Efforts
Meta announced the purchase of Assured Robot Intelligence, a startup focused on humanoid robotics, for an amount not revealed publicly.
A representative from Meta shared details with TechCrunch via email. The company specializes in robotic intelligence that allows machines to comprehend, foresee, and adjust to human actions in challenging, changing settings.
Team Joins Meta's AI Division
The full team from ARI, led by its co-founders, now works within Meta's AI group, specifically the Superintelligence Labs research arm. Before this, ARI secured seed funding from AIX Ventures, an investor in early-stage AI companies. The startup developed core AI models for humanoid robots capable of handling various physical tasks, including everyday home duties.
Co-founder Xiaolong Wang brings experience from Nvidia as a researcher and serves as an associate professor at the University of California, San Diego. He holds numerous high-profile awards in his field. The other co-founder, Lerrel Pinto, instructed courses at New York University and started Fauna Robotics, a company making small humanoid robots for children. Amazon acquired Fauna last month. Pinto also earned several notable awards.
Meta highlighted the value of this acquisition. The spokesperson noted that Pinto and Wang's group offers strong knowledge in creating models and advanced features for robot movement, self-improvement, and full-body control in humanoids.
Meta's Ongoing Robotics Work
Meta's researchers have pursued humanoid robotics technology over multiple years. A document that surfaced publicly about a year earlier outlined plans to create such a robot. It covered AI software and physical components targeted at everyday users.

Meta maintains a strong presence in social platforms like Facebook and Instagram, alongside hardware such as Quest VR headsets. In recent years, the company ramped up AI investments, releasing open-source models like Llama to compete with leaders in the space. Superintelligence Labs represents a key part of these efforts, pushing boundaries in advanced AI systems.
Path to AGI and Industry Trends
Experts in AI often argue that reaching artificial general intelligence requires more than digital training data. AGI means AI that matches or exceeds human smarts in every area. They say physical interaction through robots offers essential real-world learning.
Even without launching a consumer humanoid robot, this approach could prove vital. The deals involving ARI and Fauna point to wider competition in the sector. Predictions differ sharply. Goldman Sachs sees the market hitting $38 billion by 2035. Morgan Stanley forecasts $5 trillion by 2050. These figures show both high promise and questions about the technology's early stage.
AIX Ventures, which backed ARI, focuses on seed investments in AI startups aiming for breakthroughs. Nvidia and Amazon, former employers or acquirers linked to the founders, lead in AI hardware and robotics. Universities like UC San Diego and NYU produce top talent driving these advances.
This acquisition fits Meta's strategy to build capabilities in embodied AI, where intelligence operates in real environments. Humanoid robots promise to transform labor, from homes to factories, though timelines remain uncertain.
