Algorithm Phases
Phase 1: Semantic Seed Retrieval
Goal: Get highly relevant initial nodes/edges using pure semantic search
Process:
- Embed the user query once
- Vector search for top-K nodes (default: 20, threshold: 0.5)
- Vector search for top-K edges (default: 30, threshold: 0.4)
- Filter by similarity thresholds
Output: Seed nodes and edges with high semantic relevance
Metrics:
- Seed nodes count
- Seed edges count
- Average similarity scores
Phase 2: Smart Graph Expansion
Goal: Expand context by exploring connected graph nodes with semantic filtering
Process:
- For each level (default: 3 levels):
- Find all edges connected to current level nodes
- Extract neighbor nodes
- Re-rank neighbors by semantic similarity to original query
- Apply adaptive threshold (decays per level: 0.5 → 0.35 → 0.2)
- Keep only semantically relevant expansions
- Avoid duplicates
- Early stopping if no new nodes added
Output: Extended graph with semantically filtered neighbors
Metrics:
- Levels expanded
- Nodes/edges added per level
- Total expansion size
Phase 3: Completeness Verification
Goal: Ensure all query components are represented (no missing information)
Process:
- Extract query components (keywords + bigrams + trigrams)
- Filter stop words
- Check coverage: which components are found in nodes?
- If coverage < threshold (default: 80%):
- Identify missing components
- Targeted retrieval for each missing component
- Add gap-filling nodes with high coverage contribution
- Iterate up to max iterations (default: 2)
Output: Complete set of nodes covering all query aspects
Metrics:
- Query components identified
- Coverage ratio (0-1)
- Gaps filled
- Iterations required
Phase 4: Multi-Factor Re-Ranking
Goal: Rank results by multiple quality factors, not just semantic similarity
Process:
- Calculate graph metrics:
- Centrality: Degree centrality (normalized)
- Density: Edge count per node
- Compute final score for each node:
finalScore = semanticScore × 0.50 + // Relevance to query centralityScore × 0.20 + // Importance in graph densityScore × 0.15 + // Well-connected nodes coverageScore × 0.15 // Fills query gaps - Sort by final score
- Take top-N nodes (default: 50)
- Filter edges to only connect top nodes
- Take top-M edges (default: 70)
Output: Ranked, filtered results optimized for quality
Metrics:
- Final node/edge counts
- Average final score
Configuration
Default Configuration
const DEFAULT_SMART_CONFIG: SmartRetrievalConfig = {
seed: {
nodeLimit: 20,
edgeLimit: 30,
nodeThreshold: 0.5,
edgeThreshold: 0.4,
},
expansion: {
maxLevels: 3,
levelThresholds: [0.5, 0.35, 0.2],
maxNodesPerLevel: 15,
maxEdgesPerLevel: 25,
},
completeness: {
threshold: 0.8,
maxIterations: 2,
gapFillingLimit: 5,
minComponentLength: 3,
},
ranking: {
semanticWeight: 0.5,
centralityWeight: 0.2,
densityWeight: 0.15,
coverageWeight: 0.15,
},
output: {
maxNodes: 50,
maxEdges: 70,
},
};
Customization
You can override any part of the configuration:
const customConfig: Partial<SmartRetrievalConfig> = {
seed: {
nodeLimit: 30, // More seeds
},
expansion: {
maxLevels: 2, // Fewer levels (faster)
},
ranking: {
semanticWeight: 0.6, // Emphasize semantic more
centralityWeight: 0.3,
},
};
const smartRetrieval = new SmartRetrievalFlow(services, customConfig);
Usage
In Knowledge RAG Flow
// Create flow with smart mode
const flow = new KnowledgeRAGFlow(services, {
mode: "smart", // Use smart hybrid retrieval
});
// Execute
const result = await flow.invoke({
query: "What is React hooks?",
messages: [...],
graphId: "topic-123",
});
Direct Usage
import { SmartRetrievalFlow } from "./smart-retrieval";
const smartRetrieval = new SmartRetrievalFlow(services);
const state: KnowledgeRAGState = {
query: "Explain useState hook",
graphId: "react-topic",
// ... other state
};
const result = await smartRetrieval.smartRetrieveNode(state);
// Access results
console.log(result.relevantNodes); // Ranked nodes
console.log(result.relevantEdges); // Filtered edges
console.log(result.actions); // Detailed stats

Performance Characteristics
Time Complexity
- Phase 1: O(V log V) - vector search
- Phase 2: O(L × N × M) where L=levels, N=nodes, M=avg neighbors
- Phase 3: O(C × K) where C=components, K=gap filling limit
- Phase 4: O(N log N) - sorting
Total: O(V log V + L×N×M + C×K + N log N)
Space Complexity
- Storage: O(N + E) for nodes and edges
- Temporary: O(N) for maps and sets
Typical Performance
- Small graph (<1000 nodes): ~200-500ms
- Medium graph (1000-10000 nodes): ~500ms-2s
- Large graph (>10000 nodes): ~2-5s
Type Safety
All code is fully typed with TypeScript:
// Enhanced types with metadata
interface EnhancedNode {
id: string;
nodeType: string;
name: string;
summary: string;
attributes: Record<string, unknown>;
embedding: number[] | null;
// Retrieval metadata
semanticScore: number;
level: number;
source: "seed" | "expansion" | "gap_filling";
coverageContribution: number;
// Computed in Phase 4
centralityScore?: number;
edgeDensity?: number;
finalScore?: number;
}
// Statistics for monitoring
interface RetrievalStats {
phase1: { seedNodes: number; avgNodeSimilarity: number; ... };
phase2: { levelsExpanded: number; nodesPerLevel: number[]; ... };
phase3: { coverage: number; gapsFilled: number; ... };
phase4: { finalNodes: number; avgFinalScore: number; ... };
}
Logging and Monitoring
Comprehensive logging at each phase:

Error Handling
Robust error handling with graceful degradation:
try {
// Phase 1: Required
const phase1 = await this.phase1_SemanticSeed(...);
} catch (error) {
logError("[SMART_RETRIEVAL] Phase 1 failed:", error);
throw error; // Cannot continue
}
try {
// Phase 2: Optional (can proceed with seeds only)
const phase2 = await this.phase2_SmartExpansion(...);
} catch (error) {
logWarn("[SMART_RETRIEVAL] Phase 2 failed, using seeds only:", error);
// Continue with phase1 results
}
