πŸ“Œ Table of Contents

Overview

This project is a personal AI coach that answers trading questions strictly using your own video transcripts. It uses:

  • LangChain for RAG pipeline orchestration
  • ChromaDB as the local vector database
  • HuggingFace Embeddings (all-MiniLM-L6-v2) for semantic search β€” runs locally, no API key needed
  • Groq LLM (cloud, fast inference) or Ollama (local, fully private) β€” switchable live in the sidebar
  • SQLite for persistent multi-session chat history
  • Streamlit for the interactive web UI with live sidebar controls

The AI will only answer from your transcripts. If the answer isn't in your notes, it replies:

"I am a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) assistant β€” not a general AI chatbot like ChatGPT.

I can ONLY answer questions using the trading transcripts, notes, and documents you have uploaded.
I have zero access to real-time data, the internet, live market prices, or any knowledge outside your files.

I searched the provided excerpts but could not find any relevant information to answer your question accurately.

Please try rephrasing your question or upload more relevant transcripts!"

  • Chunk size: 800 characters with 100-character overlap (see docs/chunking_strategy.md)
  • Retrieval: Multi-stage hybrid search + cross-encoder re-ranking (see docs/retrieval_strategy.md)
  • Embedding model: all-MiniLM-L6-v2 (runs locally, ~90 MB, cached after first run)
  • Conversational Memory: SQLite persists sessions, LLM reformulates follow-up queries

Prerequisites

Ensure the following are installed on your system before proceeding:

RequirementVersionNotes
Python3.9+Download
pipLatestComes with Python
jq (CLI tool)AnyRequired for JSON document loading β€” brew install jq on macOS
Groq API Keyβ€”Free at console.groq.com (only needed for Groq provider)
OllamaLatestollama.com β€” only needed for local inference

Note: An internet connection is required on first run to download the HuggingFace embedding model (~90 MB). After that, it works fully offline for embeddings. With Ollama, inference is also fully offline.

Setup Instructions

1. Clone the Repository

git clone https://github.com/sudhakarbadugu/trading-rag-mentor.git
cd trading-rag-mentor

2. Create a Virtual Environment

python3 -m venv venv

3. Activate the Virtual Environment

  • macOS / Linux:
    source venv/bin/activate

  • Windows:
    venv\Scripts\activate

You should see (venv) appear in your terminal prompt.

4. Install Dependencies

pip install -r requirements.txt

5. Set Up Your Environment Variables

Create a .env file in the project root:

touch .env

Add the following to .env:

# ── Groq (cloud) ──────────────────────────────────────────────
GROQ_API_KEY=your_groq_api_key_here
GROQ_MODEL_NAME=openai/gpt-oss-120b

# ── Ollama (local) β€” optional, only needed if using Ollama ────
# LLM_PROVIDER=Ollama (Local & Private)
# OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://localhost:11434
# OLLAMA_MODEL=gemma3:1b
VariableRequiredDescription
GROQ_API_KEYβœ… For GroqYour Groq API key β€” get one free at console.groq.com
GROQ_MODEL_NAMEOptionalDefault Groq model shown in the sidebar
LLM_PROVIDEROptionalPre-select provider on launch: Groq (Fast Cloud) or Ollama (Local & Private)
OLLAMA_BASE_URLOptionalOllama server URL β€” default http://localhost:11434
OLLAMA_MODELOptionalDefault Ollama model tag β€” default gemma3:1b

Security: .env is listed in .gitignore and will never be committed. Never share this file.

6. Add Your Transcripts

Place your trading video transcripts in the data/transcripts/ folder. Supported file formats:

FormatNotes
.txtPlain text transcripts
.pdfPDF documents
.jsonJSON files (any structure β€” parsed with jq)

The index is built automatically on first run. If data/chroma_db/ already exists and is non-empty, the index step is skipped.

Running the App

Make sure your virtual environment is active, then run:

streamlit run src/app.py

Open http://localhost:8501 in your browser.

Using the App

  1. Type your trading question in the chat input box at the bottom of the page.
  2. Press Enter β€” the assistant searches your transcripts and responds with a structured answer:
    • Direct Answer β€” the core actionable takeaway
    • Key Reasoning β€” momentum or price action logic from your notes
    • Risk Management β€” stops, position sizing, capital preservation tips
    • Learning Notes β€” 3–5 bullet reinforcements
    • Action Steps β€” what to watch for on the chart
  3. Below the answer, expand πŸ“„ Sources to see which transcripts were retrieved and how well they matched.

If the question isn't covered in your transcripts, the response will be:

"I am a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) assistant...
(Displays the full strict out-of-bounds message explaining it only uses your notes and has no internet access).

Sidebar Configuration

The βš™οΈ RAG Configuration sidebar lets you tune the pipeline live without restarting:

LLM Provider Toggle

At the top of the sidebar, a πŸ€– LLM Provider radio button lets you switch between:

OptionDescription
Groq (Fast Cloud)Calls the Groq API β€” fastest inference, requires GROQ_API_KEY
Ollama (Local & Private)Runs a model on your machine β€” no data leaves your network

A connection status badge appears below the toggle β€” 🟒 Connected or πŸ”΄ Not running. If Ollama is unreachable, an ⚑ Switch to Groq button appears so you can fall back instantly.

Ollama (Local & Private)

When Ollama is selected, two additional controls appear:

ControlDefaultDescription
Ollama Modelgemma3:1bSelectbox of your locally installed models
Ollama Base URLhttp://localhost:11434URL of your Ollama server β€” change for remote/Docker Ollama

Quick Ollama setup:

# Install Ollama
brew install ollama       # macOS
# or download from https://ollama.com

# Start the server
ollama serve

# Pull a model (pick any that fits your RAM)
ollama pull gemma3:1b     # 815 MB β€” fastest
ollama pull gemma3:latest # 3.3 GB β€” better quality
ollama pull mistral # 4.1 GB

Then open the sidebar, select Ollama (Local & Private), and pick your model.

Other Controls

ControlWhat it does
🧩 ModelSwitch between available Groq or Ollama models without restarting
🌑️ Temperature0.0 = deterministic answers, 1.0 = more creative β€” default is 0.0 for strict factual recall
πŸ” k (chunks)Number of transcript chunks retrieved per query (1–15, default 6) β€” increase for broader context

Changes apply to the next question you ask.

Session Management

Chat history is persisted in SQLite (data/chat_history.db) and survives browser refreshes and app restarts.

ActionHow
Start a new sessionClick βž• New Session in the sidebar
Switch between sessionsUse the Switch session dropdown
Clear a sessionClick πŸ—‘οΈ Clear This Session

Each session is stored independently and can be revisited at any time.

Source Citations & Relevance Scores

After every answer, expand the πŸ“„ Sources panel to see:

  • Filename of the retrieved transcript
  • Page number (for PDFs)
  • Relevance badge β€” colour-coded match score from ChromaDB cosine similarity:
BadgeScoreMeaning
🟒β‰₯ 70%Strong match β€” highly relevant chunk
🟑40–69%Moderate match β€” partially relevant
πŸ”΄< 40%Weak match β€” treat with caution
  • Content preview β€” first 300 characters of the retrieved chunk

Running Evaluation Tests

The project includes a pytest evaluation suite that tests retrieval quality and pipeline integrity β€” no LLM calls needed (fast and free).

# Make sure venv is active
source venv/bin/activate

# Run all 18 tests
python -m pytest tests/ -v

What the tests cover

Test ClassWhat it checks
TestIndexIntegritydata/chroma_db/ exists & non-empty, data dir has transcript files, vectorstore loads correctly
TestRetrievalQuality5 known trading Q&A pairs β€” keyword assertions + minimum relevance score thresholds + sanity check (trading query scores higher than off-topic query)
TestPromptTemplate{context} and {question} placeholders exist, RAG grounding instructions are present

All 18 tests should pass in ~15 seconds.

RAG Evaluation Framework

Beyond basic retrieval tests, this project includes a full RAG evaluation pipeline that measures answer quality across three dimensions:

MetricWhat it measuresMethod
Retrieval RecallAre the right transcript chunks retrieved?Keyword matching against expected context
Answer FaithfulnessIs the answer grounded in context (no hallucination)?LLM-as-judge via Groq
Answer RelevanceDoes the answer address the question?LLM-as-judge via Groq

Golden QA Dataset

tests/golden_qa.json contains 12 curated question/keyword triplets spanning VCP patterns, risk management, entry rules, fundamentals, and mindset β€” all grounded in actual transcript content.

Running the evaluation

# Retrieval recall only (fast, no API key needed)
python scripts/evaluate_rag.py --retrieval-only

# Full evaluation with LLM-as-judge (requires GROQ_API_KEY)
python scripts/evaluate_rag.py

Results are saved to scripts/evaluation_results.json and printed as a table:

ID                             Category           Retrieval   Faith.    Relev.

vcp_definition                 vcp                100%        1.0       1.0
200_day_ma_rule                entries             83%        1.0       1.0
stop_loss_rule                 risk_management    100%        1.0       1.0
...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MEAN                                               87%        0.95      0.97

Design decisions

  • LLM-as-judge rather than embedding similarity β€” catches semantic hallucination, not just keyword overlap.
  • No new dependencies β€” built entirely on the existing LangChain + Groq stack.
  • Pytest integration β€” tests/test_rag_evaluation.py validates the dataset and retrieval recall without LLM calls.
  • See docs/evaluation_framework.md for the full methodology.

πŸ’‘ Industry context: This approach follows the same evaluation dimensions as RAGAS and DeepEval, the two leading RAG evaluation frameworks.

Ragas Integration & Debugging Log

This section documents the full integration of Ragas 0.4.x alongside the custom LLM-as-judge evaluator, including every non-obvious error encountered and how each was resolved. The key discovery β€” a reasoning-token overflow in Groq's llama-3.3-70b-versatile β€” is worth preserving in detail.

Why Ragas?

The custom evaluator covers retrieval recall + two LLM-as-judge dimensions. Ragas adds five complementary dimensions from a single library call:

Ragas MetricWhat it measures
FaithfulnessIs every claim in the answer supported by the context?
Answer RelevancyDoes the answer address the actual question asked?
Context Precision (w/ref)Are retrieved chunks ranked best-first vs. reference answer?
Context RecallDoes the retrieved context cover everything in the reference?
Factual CorrectnessDoes the answer match the reference answer factually?

Running Ragas evaluation

# Standalone (all 12 golden QA pairs)
python scripts/ragas_eval.py

# Quick smoke-test on first 3 questions
python scripts/ragas_eval.py --sample 3

# Skip reference-dependent metrics (no reference_answer needed)
python scripts/ragas_eval.py --no-reference

# Combined custom + Ragas table
python scripts/evaluate_rag.py --ragas

Results are saved to scripts/ragas_results.json and printed as a table.

Bug 1 β€” LangchainLLMWrapper rejected by collections metrics

Error:

ValueError: Collections metrics only support modern InstructorLLM.
Found: LangchainLLMWrapper

Root cause: Ragas 0.4 split metrics into two separate class hierarchies. The new ragas.metrics.collections metrics (Faithfulness, AnswerRelevancy, etc.) require ragas' own InstructorLLM β€” they explicitly reject LangChain wrapper objects.

Fix: Use ragas' llm_factory() with an AsyncOpenAI client pointed at Groq's OpenAI-compatible endpoint:

from ragas.llms import llm_factory
from openai import AsyncOpenAI

groq_client = AsyncOpenAI(
    api_key=groq_api_key,
    base_url="https://api.groq.com/openai/v1",
)
ragas_llm = llm_factory("llama-3.3-70b-versatile", provider="openai",
                         client=groq_client, max_tokens=16384)

Bug 2 β€” Cannot use agenerate() with a synchronous client

Error:

RuntimeError: Cannot use agenerate() with a synchronous client

Root cause: All ragas.metrics.collections metrics call ascore() (async) internally. The OpenAI client is synchronous; only AsyncOpenAI supports the async interface.

Fix: Replace OpenAI(...) with AsyncOpenAI(...) β€” same parameters, different class.

Bug 3 β€” KeyError: 'chat_history'

Error:

KeyError: 'chat_history'

Root cause: The trading mentor prompt template has three placeholders: {context}, {question}, and {chat_history}. The evaluation scripts called rag_prompt.format(context=..., question=...) without supplying chat_history.

Fix: Add chat_history="" to every standalone rag_prompt.format() call in both ragas_eval.py and evaluate_rag.py:

answer = rag_prompt.format(context=context, question=question, chat_history="")

Bug 4 β€” ragas.evaluate() rejects collections metrics

Error:

TypeError: All metrics must be initialised metric objects,
e.g: metrics=[BleuScore(), AspectCritic()]

Root cause: ragas.evaluate() checks isinstance(m, ragas.metrics.base.Metric). The new ragas.metrics.collections classes inherit from BaseMetric β†’ SimpleBaseMetric β†’ NumericValidator, not from the legacy ragas.metrics.base.Metric. The isinstance check fails silently then raises this misleading TypeError.

# MRO of Faithfulness (ragas 0.4.3):
BaseMetric β†’ SimpleBaseMetric β†’ NumericValidator β†’ BaseValidator β†’ ABC β†’ object
# ❌ ragas.metrics.base.Metric is NOT in this chain

Fix: Bypass ragas.evaluate() entirely and call metric.batch_score(inputs) directly. Each metric's input dict keys must match its ascore() positional arguments exactly:

MetricRequired input dict keys
Faithfulnessuser_input, response, retrieved_contexts
AnswerRelevancyuser_input, response
ContextPrecisionWithReferenceuser_input, reference, retrieved_contexts
ContextRecalluser_input, retrieved_contexts, reference
FactualCorrectnessresponse, reference
# Build per-metric input list
inputs = [
    {"user_input": q, "response": a, "retrieved_contexts": ctx}
    for q, a, ctx in zip(questions, answers, contexts)
]
scores = metric.batch_score(inputs)   # returns list[float]

Bug 5 β€” Reasoning token overflow (the key discovery)

Error:

Faithfulness failed: output incomplete due to max_tokens length limit
FactualCorrectness failed: output incomplete due to max_tokens length limit

Root cause: Groq routes llama-3.3-70b-versatile through a reasoning model that generates hidden chain-of-thought tokens before producing the visible JSON output. Inspecting the raw completion object revealed:

completion_tokens : 12 288
  β”œβ”€ reasoning_tokens : 7 580   ← hidden, consumed from max_tokens budget
  └─ visible output  :   708
prompt_tokens      :  8 763

Ragas' ModelArguments defaults to max_tokens=1024. At that limit, the reasoning layer alone consumes 7,580 tokens β€” more than 7Γ— the budget β€” leaving the model zero tokens to write the closing brace of the JSON response. The result is a truncated, unparseable JSON string.

Increasing to max_tokens=4096 still fails: 7,580 reasoning tokens > 4,096 limit.

Fix: Set max_tokens=16384 in the llm_factory() call, giving the reasoning layer its full budget with headroom for the JSON response:

ragas_llm = llm_factory(
    "llama-3.3-70b-versatile",
    provider="openai",
    client=groq_client,
    max_tokens=16384,   # ← must exceed reasoning_tokens (~7 580) + response tokens
)

Why this matters beyond Groq: Any provider that runs a reasoning model (OpenAI o1/o3, Anthropic extended thinking, DeepSeek-R1, etc.) with ragas will hit this same issue. The default max_tokens=1024 in ModelArguments predates reasoning models and is universally insufficient for them. Always set max_tokens to at least 4Γ— your expected response size when using a reasoning-capable model.

Score summary:

MetricScoreRatingWhat it means
Context Precision1.000PerfectEvery retrieved chunk is relevant
Context Recall1.000PerfectYou retrieved ALL needed information
Faithfulness0.955ExcellentAnswers are strongly grounded in retrieved context
Answer Relevancy0.684GoodAnswers mostly address the question
Factual Correctness0.253PoorAnswers have many factual errors vs ground truth

Context precision and recall are perfect (1.000) β€” the hybrid retrieval + re-ranking pipeline is surfacing exactly the right chunks. Faithfulness reached 0.955 (near-perfect), continuing its trend from 0.738 β†’ 0.882 β†’ 0.955 across successive prompt iterations β€” the stricter grounding rules are clearly working. Factual correctness dipped to 0.253 (from 0.370), suggesting the tighter prompt may be causing the model to be more conservative and omit details present in the reference answers. Answer relevancy remains steady at 0.684, still dragged down by stop_loss_rule (0.453) β€” a candidate for question reformulation in the golden dataset.

LangSmith Observability

This project includes integrated observability via LangSmith (free tier compatible). With tracing enabled, you can inspect the inner workings of the RAG pipeline in real-time.

To enable tracing, the following environment variables must be configured in your .env file:

LANGCHAIN_TRACING_V2=true
LANGCHAIN_PROJECT=trading-rag-mentor
LANGSMITH_API_KEY=your_langsmith_api_key

(Note: LangSmith tracing activates automatically when LANGCHAIN_TRACING_V2=true is present, requiring no code changes to the LangChain pipeline.)

What You Can See in LangSmith

Log into your LangSmith dashboard to monitor the application in production:

  • ⏱️ Retrieval Latency: View the exact execution time for each step in the pipeline. You can see precisely how many milliseconds are spent on query reformulation, BM25 retrieval, vector search, and cross-encoder re-ranking.
  • πŸ“Š Score Distributions: Inspect the ChromaDB similarity scores and the cross-encoder re-ranking scores for every retrieved chunk. This highlights whether the system is returning high-confidence matches or struggling to find relevant context.
  • ❌ Failure Cases: Quickly diagnose exceptions and unexpected outputs. If a query results in the fallback "Not in my notes" response or if an API call to Groq/Ollama times out, the trace captures the exact inputs, intermediate states, and token counts to make debugging trivial.
  • πŸ”„ Token Usage: Track prompt, reasoning, and completion tokens consumed per query to manage costs and context window limits.

Adding Your Own Transcripts

  1. Drop files into data/transcripts/
  2. Supported formats: .txt, .pdf, .json
  3. Delete data/chroma_db/ to force a re-index:
    rm -rf data/chroma_db/

  4. Re-run the app β€” the index rebuilds automatically on startup

🐳 Docker & Deployment

The project ships with a multi-stage Dockerfile, a docker-compose.yml for local dev, and platform configs for Render.com and Railway.app. All three share the same image with zero changes β€” $PORT is injected by the platform at runtime.

Local Docker (docker compose)

# 1. Copy the example env file and add your Groq API key
cp .env.example .env          # then set GROQ_API_KEY=<your_key>

# 2. Build and start (first build takes ~10 min β€” torch is large)
docker compose up

# 3. Open the app
open http://localhost:8501

# ── Common commands ───────────────────────────────────────────
docker compose up --build # force rebuild after code changes
docker compose down # stop (volumes preserved)
docker compose down -v # stop + wipe all persistent data

Volumes: ChromaDB and chat_history.db are stored in the trading_rag_data named volume and survive restarts. Your transcripts are bind-mounted read-only from ./data/transcripts/ β€” drop new files there and the next query triggers an incremental re-index automatically.

Deploy to Google Cloud Run

Google Cloud Run requires images to be built for the linux/amd64 architecture. If you are building on an Apple Silicon (M-series) Mac, you must specify the platform flag to prevent runtime execution format errors.

# 1. Build the image for Cloud Run architecture
docker build --platform linux/amd64 -t trading-rag-mentor-gcp .

# 2. Test the Cloud Run image locally (Optional)
docker run --rm -p 8501:8501 --name local-rag-test --env-file .env trading-rag-mentor-gcp
# Stop the test with: docker stop local-rag-test

# 3. Tag and Push to Google Container Registry
docker tag trading-rag-mentor-gcp gcr.io/[YOUR_PROJECT_ID]/trading-rag-mentor
docker push gcr.io/[YOUR_PROJECT_ID]/trading-rag-mentor

# 4. Deploy the service
gcloud run deploy trading-rag-mentor \
  --image gcr.io/[YOUR_PROJECT_ID]/trading-rag-mentor \
  --platform managed \
  --region us-central1 \
  --allow-unauthenticated \
  --memory 4Gi \
  --timeout 300

(Make sure to replace [YOUR_PROJECT_ID] with your actual GCP Project ID!)

Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
GROQ_API_KEY not set errorEnsure .env exists in the project root with your key
No documents found to indexMake sure files exist in data/transcripts/
Old answers after adding transcriptsDelete data/chroma_db/ and restart the app
jq not foundbrew install jq (macOS) or apt install jq (Linux)
Embeddings download is slowFirst-run only; cached in ~/.cache/huggingface/ after that
Port 8501 already in useRun streamlit run src/app.py --server.port 8502
Tests fail with chroma_db not builtRun the app once first to build the index, then run tests
Ollama β€” πŸ”΄ Not running badgeRun ollama serve in a separate terminal
Ollama β€” model not found errorRun ollama pull <model-name> to download the model first
Ollama β€” slow first responseModel is loading into RAM; subsequent queries are faster
Ollama β€” out of memoryUse a smaller model (e.g. gemma3:1b) or increase RAM
Docker build fails on spaCy modelEnsure internet access during docker build (model download)
Container OOM killedIncrease memory limit in docker-compose.yml (deploy.resources.limits.memory)
Render deploy stuck at health checkCheck logs β€” index build on first start can take 2–3 minutes
Railway volume not persistingAttach a Volume in Railway dashboard and mount at /app/data
