1. Introduction

1.1. Product Vision

To create a central, high-quality content hub that serves as a primary engine for organic growth. The blog will attract and engage our diverse target audience through valuable, keyword-rich content, establishing our brand as an authoritative voice in the industry and driving measurable improvements in search engine rankings.

1.2. Problem Statement

Our website currently lacks a dedicated platform for publishing in-depth, valuable content. This limits our ability to engage with our audience at different stages of their journey, from technical developers seeking deep dives to potential customers researching solutions. Without a blog, we are missing significant opportunities to improve our SEO, drive organic traffic, and nurture leads through content marketing.

    • Articles that address common industry challenges and present solutions.

3. User Stories

  • As a Content Creator (Developer), I want to be able to embed code snippets with syntax highlighting, so that my technical articles are clear and easy for other developers to read.
  • As a Content Creator (All), I want to schedule posts to be published at a future date and time, so that I can plan my content calendar in advance.
  • As a Content Creator (All), I want to see SEO-related metrics like keyword density and readability score within the editor, so that I can optimize my content for search engines before publishing.
  • As a Reader (Devon), I want to filter and search blog posts by topic or tag, so that I can easily find content relevant to my technical interests.

6. Constraints & Dependencies

6.1. Constraints

  • Technology Stack: The blog must be built using the existing technology stack: Next.js, PayloadCMS, and TypeScript.
  • Design System: The blog must adhere to the existing website's design system and branding guidelines.
  • Budget: The project must be completed within the allocated budget for development resources.
  • Timeline: The initial version (MVP) should be launched within a 10-week timeframe.

6.2. Dependencies

  • PayloadCMS: The entire blog's backend and content management capabilities depend on PayloadCMS.
  • Next.js i18n: The blog's frontend structure depends on the existing internationalization setup in Next.js.
  • Content Team: The success of the blog is dependent on the content team's ability to produce high-quality, consistent content.
  • Design Resources: Any custom UI elements or pages will require input from the design team.

7. High-Level Technical Architecture Overview

The blog will be a fully integrated part of the existing Next.js and PayloadCMS monorepo.

  • Backend (PayloadCMS):

    • A new collection, Posts, will be defined in the cms/collections directory.
    • This collection will define the schema for blog posts, including fields like title, slug, content (rich text), excerpt, author (relationship to Users), publishedAt, featuredImage (relationship to a Media collection), and tags.
    • Payload's Admin UI will serve as the content management interface.
    • Payload will automatically generate REST/GraphQL endpoints for the Posts collection, which will be consumed by the Next.js frontend.
  • Frontend (Next.js):

    • Two new page structures will be added to the src/app/[lang] directory:
      • blog/page.tsx: The blog index page. This page will fetch a list of posts from the PayloadCMS API at build time (using getStaticProps) and display them.
      • blog/[slug]/page.tsx: The dynamic blog post detail page. This page will fetch the data for a single post based on the slug from the URL at build time (getStaticPaths and getStaticProps).
    • Reusable React components will be created to render the post list, post content, author bio, and other UI elements.
    • The rich text content from PayloadCMS will be rendered using a suitable library (e.g., a serializer for the chosen rich text editor like Slate or Lexical).
    • The existing i18n setup will be leveraged to handle the lang parameter in the URL.
  • Data Flow:

    1. Content creators use the PayloadCMS Admin UI to create and manage posts.
    2. During the Next.js build process, the frontend fetches data from the PayloadCMS API.
    3. Next.js statically generates the blog pages, ensuring fast load times.
    4. Users navigate to the blog on the live website, served by the Next.js application.

8. Phased Rollout Plan & Release Criteria

8.1. Phase 1: Minimum Viable Product (MVP) - (6-8 Weeks)

  • Features Included:
    • Posts collection in PayloadCMS with fields for multilingual content (Title, Slug, Content, Excerpt per language), Author, PublishedAt.
    • Blog Index page (/[lang]/blog) with a search bar, displaying posts in the current language.
    • Blog Post Detail page (/[lang]/blog/[slug]), displaying the post in the current language.
    • A reusable component to display recent/featured blog posts, styled with Shadcn.
    • Integration of the blog posts component into the homepage.
    • Basic Rich Text Editor.
    • Responsive design.
    • Full integration with the existing i18n structure for content delivery.
  • Release Criteria:
    • All "Must-Have" functional and non-functional requirements are met.
    • Content creators can successfully create, edit, and publish posts in all three languages.
    • Blog posts are rendered correctly on the frontend using Shadcn components, with the correct language version displayed based on the URL.
    • The search functionality returns relevant results for the currently selected language.
    • The homepage correctly displays the recent/featured blog posts component, with posts shown in the correct language.
    • The feature has been tested on staging and approved by stakeholders.

8.2. Phase 2: Enhanced Content & SEO - (2-3 Weeks after MVP)

  • Features Included:
    • Code snippet embedding with syntax highlighting.
    • Featured image support.
    • Tags/Categories for posts, with the ability to filter by them on the index page.
    • Basic SEO meta tags (title, description) are auto-populated from post data.
    • Social sharing buttons.
    • Author Detail Page (/[lang]/authors/[slug]).
  • Release Criteria:
    • All "Should-Have" requirements from this phase are implemented and tested.
    • Technical writers can successfully publish posts with code snippets.
    • Social sharing functionality works as expected.
    • Author Detail Pages are generated correctly and list the appropriate posts.

8.3. Phase 3: Optimization & Advanced Features - (Ongoing)

  • Features Included:
    • Post scheduling.
    • Commenting system.
    • Author bio section (linking to the Author Detail Page).
    • SEO tools within the editor (e.g., readability analysis).
    • CTA integration.
    • Performance optimization and monitoring.
  • Release Criteria:
    • Features will be released as they are completed, based on priority and resource availability.
    • Each feature will have its own acceptance criteria defined before development begins.
    • For the commenting system, criteria will include successful submission, display, moderation, and spam prevention.

9. Future Considerations (Out of Scope for V1)

  • Email Newsletter: Integrating a subscription service to notify users of new posts.
  • Advanced User Accounts: Allowing users to create accounts, save posts, manage their comment history, and have public profiles.
  • Advanced Personalization: Recommending posts to users based on their reading history.
  • Advanced Translation Workflow: Features like translation memory, integration with third-party translation services (e.g., DeepL, Google Translate), or side-by-side translation views within the CMS.
