Project goals update — December 2025

The Rust project is currently working towards a slate of 41 project goals , with 13 of them designated as Flagship Goals . This post provides selected updates on our progress towards these goals (or, in some cases, lack thereof). The full details for any particular goal are available in its associated tracking issue on the rust-project-goals repository . Comment by @frank-king posted on 2025-12-18: Key developments : forbid manual impl of Unpin for #[pin_v2] types .y.z etc).a works, then @x.0.y. (BACK TO TOP)

Notes from "On Writing Well"

I’ve been trying to improve my writing so I read On Writing Well by William Zinsser. My main takeaways: Clear thinking is a prerequisite for clear writing. How do you avoid cluttered writing? “The answer is to clear our heads of clutter. Clear thinking becomes clear writing; one can’t exist without the other. It’s impossible for a muddy thinker to write good English.” Reduce scope. Zinsser hammers this point repeatedly. For instance: “Nobody can write a book or an article ‘about’ something. (BACK TO TOP)

254. Start Fresh: How Framing, Timing, and Talk Can Improve Your Finances

How to have more open conversations about money. Talking about money is taboo for many people. But according to Wendy De La Rosa , financial well-being only starts when we break the silence around finance. De La Rosa is a professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a co-founder of the Common Cents Lab, an initiative aiming to increase financial well-being for low- to moderate-income people. For many, she says, shame keeps us silent about money.io/premium .  (BACK TO TOP)

I switched from VSCode to Zed

For many years VSCode has been my day-to-day IDE for everything: Python, Go, C, occasional frontend development, and what not. It was never perfect but it worked. I like using mainstream tools with minimal configuration, so it suited me perfectly. But recent VSCode developments forced me to look for an alternative. In December I switched to Zed completely, and I think I'm never going back. VSCode no more VSCode felt stable over the years. This changed with the AI era. Few examples.k.a........... (BACK TO TOP)

The right place at the right time

Recently, the New Stack had a piece excerpting some of my conversation with Gergely Orosz . In introducing me in the piece, Joab Jackson writes "Cantrill has had a knack at being at the right place at the right time." While this is objectively true at some level, it also gave me a double take: it rarely felt true at the time. I never doubted going to school, but I also have never taken a job for granted. Radar processes billions of location events daily, powering geofencing and location APIs for companies like Uber, Lyft, and thousands of other apps. When their existing infrastructure started hitting performance and cost limits, they built HorizonDB, a specialized database which replaced both Elasticsearch and MongoDB with a custom single binary written in Rust and backed by RocksDB. In this episode, we dive deep into the technical journey from prototype to production.g.g. (BACK TO TOP)

The Liskov Substitution Principle does more than you think

Happy New Year! I'm done with the newsletter hiatus and am going to try updating weekly again. To ease into things a bit, I'll try to keep posts a little more off the cuff and casual for a while, at least until Logic for Programmers is done. Speaking of which, v0.13 should be out by the end of this month. So for this newsletter I want to talk about the Liskov Substitution Principle (LSP). Then ϕ(y) should be true for objects y of type S where S is a subtype of T. 3 e.g. For a function f , f.  ↩ (BACK TO TOP)

There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape

So, I'm walking through a park when I see this thing lying on the ground: It's a disposable vape that someone has discarded because it's empty. Specifically, it's a "Fizzy Max III 60K Rechargeable Disposable Vape" and I was about to take it to a bin to throw away when I noticed it had USB-C. I know nothing about vapes so that was a total WTF moment.  Naturally, I took it home, sanitized it, and plugged it in. It looks kind of cyberpunk. At the bottom there are two circuit boards and a battery. (BACK TO TOP)

You asked about a friend's son who is a recent graduate looking for work as a software developer and having a hard time. Promoting AI agents

At the end of last year, AI agents really came alive for me. Partly because the models got better, but more so because we gave them the tools to take their capacity beyond pure reasoning. Now coding agents are controlling the terminal, running tests to validate their work, searching the web for documentation, and using web services with skills we taught them in plain English.5, Codex 5, Gemini 3, and even the Chinese open-weight models like MiniMax M2.1 and GLM-4. A Typical PDF

When folks contact me about my forensic software, they typically ask the same three questions: "Can you detect deep fakes?" This usually goes into a detailed discussion about how they define a deep fake, but the general conclusion is "yes". "Can you handle audio and video?" Yes, but the evaluation process is a lot harder than pictures. Quality means everything, and a high quality video is usually lower quality than a low quality picture. By "documents", they almost always mean PDF. Objects.5".7. (BACK TO TOP)

A data model for Git (and other docs updates)

Hello! This past fall, I decided to take some time to work on Git’s documentation. I’ve been thinking about working on open source docs for a long time – usually if I think the documentation for something could be improved, I’ll write a blog post or a zine or something. So we wrote a new “data model” document! You can read the data model here for now . I assume at some point (after the next release?) it’ll also be on the Git website .default is set to.kernel. As I do every year, it's that time to reflect on the year that's been, and talk about some of my hopes and goals for the next year! I'll be honest, this one is harder to write than last year's. Their “Can you cut LED strip lights” page also says “Many strip lights are cuttable, and some even allow the cut parts to be reused and added to the strip light using a connector. Software Acceleration and Desynchronization

A bit more than a month ago, I posted the following on social media: Seeing more reports and industry players blaming code reviews for slowing down the quick development done with AI. It's unclear whether anyone's asking if this is just moving the cognitive bottleneck of "understanding what's happening" around. "Add AI to the reviews" seems to be the end goal here. A pattern I’ll start with is one of loops, or cycles. This saves time and lets people focus on higher-level review elements.g. [.... (BACK TO TOP)

I spent the second half of 2025 building a voice agent platform for a company that provides IT support services to higher education institutions. The platform is now live and handling calls from students and staff across multiple universities. We built a multi-tenant system where students call a phone number, speak with an AI agent, … Continue reading "Building Production-Ready Voice Agents" (BACK TO TOP)

Writing something down forces you to fully understand it. When the idea is on paper, you can see all the missing assumptions and leaps in logic. It’s common to start writing, do some research and find out that your original point was wrong . This is a good thing. You are now less wrong then you were before, and have something you can share so that we can all be less wrong. Your work can have a lasting impact on lots of people rather then being briefly noticed by a few. (BACK TO TOP)

BGP Updates cin 2025

The first part of this annual report on BGP for the year 2024 looked at the size of the routing table and some projections of table growth for both IPv4 and IPv6. However, the scalability of BGP as the Internet’s routing protocol is not just dependant on the number of prefixes carried in the routing table. BGP protocol behaviour in the form of dynamic routing updates are also part of this story. (BACK TO TOP)

BGP in 2025

At the start of each year, it’s been my practice to report on the behaviour of the Internet’s inter-domain routing system over the previous 12 months, looking in some detail at some metrics from the routing system that can show the essential shape and behaviour of the underlying interconnection fabric of the Internet. Who Benefited from the Aisuru and Kimwolf Botnets?

Our first story of 2026 revealed how a destructive new botnet called Kimwolf rapidly grew to infect more than two million devices by mass-compromising a vast number of unofficial Android TV streaming boxes. AWS and Microsoft are selling much more than cloud services

Ten, twenty years ago customers over at large corporations would often ask me what hardware they’d need to run my software. As software developers, we’d tend to be rather blasé about such questions: “whatever you have lying around!”. If pressed, we’d say you’d need this much RAM and that much storage. We thought we were doing our users a tremendous favor by being so flexible. Yet, customers were very much not happy with our responses. (BACK TO TOP)

Unsigned char std::basic_string<> in C++

Brief post on a somewhat vexing and irritating C++ problem I ran into some time ago. I hope that this page will help other people deal with this problem more quickly than I did. I’ve long used std::basic_string<uint8_t>, an unsigned char string, for fiddling with bits. You could use a regular char string, but especially when doing cryptographic or sub-byte operations, it is more convenient to not have to deal with sign bits. (BACK TO TOP)

The Dictator's Handbook and the politics of technical competence

The Dictator’s Handbook is an ambitious book. In the introduction, its authors Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith cast themselves as the successors to Sun Tzu and Niccolo Machiavelli: offering unsentimental advice to would-be successful leaders. Given that, I expected this book to be similar to The 48 Laws of Power , which did not impress me. Like many self-help books, The 48 Laws of Power is “empty calories”: a lot of fun to read, but not really useful or edifying 1 .e.g.g. ↩ (BACK TO TOP)

What I Got Wrong About “Hard Work” in My 20s

VStarcam is an important brand of cameras based on the PPPP protocol . Unlike the LookCam cameras I looked into earlier , these are often being positioned as security cameras. And they in fact do a few things better like… well, like having a mostly working authentication mechanism. In order to access the camera one has to know its administrator password. Analysis of PPPP “encryption”

My first article on the PPPP protocol already said everything there was to say about PPPP “encryption” : Keys are static and usually trivial to extract from the app. No matter how long the original key, it is mapped to an effective key that’s merely four bytes long. The “encryption” is extremely susceptible to known-plaintext attacks, usually allowing reconstruction of the effective key from a single encrypted packet. I’ve opened a pull request to have the PPPP device detection script adjusted. (BACK TO TOP)

Are Database System Researchers Making Correct Assumptions about Transaction Workloads?

In this blog, we had reviewed quite a number of deterministic database papers, including Calvin , SLOG , Detock , which aimed to achieve higher throughput and lower latency. The downside of these systems is sacrificing transaction expressivity. So when these deterministic database researchers write a paper to validate how these assumptions hold in the real world, we should be skeptical and cautious in our reading. Recent work suggests we may be projecting ourselves onto LLMs more than we admit. A paper in Nature reports that GPT-4 exhibits "state anxiety". When exposed to traumatic narratives (such as descriptions of accidents or violence), the model's responses score much higher on a standard psychological anxiety inventory. The jump is large, from "low anxiety" to levels comparable to highly anxious humans. Another recent paper argues that LLMs can develop a form of brain rot. (BACK TO TOP)

AI Coding Assistants Are Getting Worse

In recent months, I’ve noticed a troubling trend with AI coding assistants . After two years of steady improvements, over the course of 2025, most of the core models reached a quality plateau, and more recently, seem to be in decline. A task that might have taken five hours assisted by AI, and perhaps 10 hours without it, is now more commonly taking seven or eight hours, or even longer. My team has a sandbox where we create, deploy, and run AI-generated code without a human in the loop. df = pd. (BACK TO TOP)

These Hearing Aids Will Tune in to Your Brain

Imagine you’re at a bustling dinner party filled with laughter, music, and clinking silverware. You’re trying to follow a conversation across the table, but every word feels like it’s wrapped in noise. For most people, these types of party scenarios, where it’s difficult to filter out extraneous sounds and focus on a single source, are an occasional annoyance. For millions with hearing loss , they’re a daily challenge—and not just in busy settings. And I’m not alone. By 2050, an estimated 2.D. (BACK TO TOP)

How the Dictaphone Entered Office Life

Thanks to Hollywood, whenever I think of a Dictaphone, my imagination immediately jumps to a mid-20th-century office, Don Draper suavely seated at his desk, voicing ad copy into a desktop machine. A perfectly coiffed woman from the secretarial pool then takes the recordings and neatly types them up, with carbon copies of course. I had no idea the Dictaphone actually had its roots in the 19th century and a rivalry between two early tech giants: Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison.S.C.S.S.S.S. (BACK TO TOP)

Global Giants Are Investing in Clean Tech Despite Politics

The Trump administration has given corporations plenty of convenient excuses to retreat from their climate commitments, with its moves to withdraw from the Paris Agreement , roll back emissions regulations, and scale back clean-energy incentives. But will the world’s largest corporations follow its lead? Some multinational companies have indeed scaled back. They are continuing their climate policies, but often doing so quietly to avoid scrutiny . While President Donald Trump dismantles U.S.S.S. (BACK TO TOP)

See the Sky Like Never Before With a DIY Eyepiece

When it comes to viewing nebulae, galaxies, and other deep-sky objects, amateur astronomers on a budget have had two options. They can view with the naked eye through a telescope and perceive these spectacular objects as faint smudges that don’t even begin to capture their majesty, or they can capture long-exposure images with astrocameras and display the results on a view screen or computer, which robs the immediacy of the stargazing experience.2 seconds of exposure time on the sensor. CES 2026 Preview: E-ink Smartphone, Allergen Detector, and More

Jacob’s Ladder

I know now how the sparks can climb, in broadening arcs of ions— the heat they grow inside themselves like some permission or belief. But at ten, it seemed mystical; their frown, glowing, then invisible. Gone. Save the odor of ozone. I was young and scared and alone. But the buzz and brightness began anew in darker shades of blue. Then electrons leaping spoke to me, not in words, but in dignity: how they escaped the box where they were born. Joined in a plasma haze, they rose unafraid. (BACK TO TOP)

This Engineer Builds Bespoke Accordions and Autonomous Car Systems

When Sergey Antonovich rediscovered a childhood passion for music, he found an unexpected application for his skills as an embedded systems engineer: building bespoke digital accordions. Antonovich admits the accordion isn’t the coolest instrument. It was chosen for him by his mother when he was 8, and he quickly lost interest as a teenager. While growing up close to Moscow, his adolescent passions were instead channeled into electronics and tinkering with gadgets in after-school classes.” (BACK TO TOP)
